Testa del Polpo Beach

Testa del Polpo beach is one of the unmissable experiences the island of La Maddalena can offer visitors in search of unspoilt nature. This beach lies on the Giardinelli peninsula, on the north-eastern side of La Maddalena, and its evocative name comes from the particular shape of the granite rocks that emerge from the water, recalling the head of an octopus (“polpo”). After driving along the only road, very narrow and bumpy, on the Giardinelli peninsula and turning at the sign indicating the beach, you reach an asphalt clearing where you can easily park. A short walk on foot is needed to reach the beach.

The walk

During the walk you cross a short, level path rich in plants including junipers, cistus, myrtle and mastic; you also pass over smooth rocks which, if climbed, offer panoramic viewpoints over the Giardinelli coast.

Beach features

Testa del Polpo is not a classic sandy beach. It is rather a succession of rocky coves separated by granite formations smoothed by wind and sea, and a rocky configuration that creates a natural barrier against currents and waves. The sand is fine and pale, mixed with granite grains. The beach is absolutely safe, the depth increasing gently as you move away from the shore. The seabeds are mixed, with sandy areas giving way to shoals and rocky zones, rich in marine life. The water is crystal clear with shades of blue turning to turquoise depending on the sunlight and the strength of the wind.

Marine flora and fauna

Its position within the protected area of the National Park ensures a particularly rich marine ecosystem. The waters around Testa del Polpo host posidonia meadows, rock fish, sea urchins and octopuses (hence the name of the spot). For snorkellers, this beach offers one of the most interesting settings on the main island.

Park regulations and protection
The whole area falls within the protected zone of the La Maddalena Archipelago National Park. This entails precise rules to respect:

Absolute ban on removing sand, shells, rocks or biological material;
Obligation to take away all the waste you produce;
Ban on lighting fires or barbecues;
Ban on camping and overnight stays;
Respect for the flora: do not trample or damage the vegetation.

Facilities and equipment
This wild beach has no facilities, so you must bring food, water and snacks with you.

Best time to visit

The ideal months are May, June and September, when tourist flows are lower and temperatures are still pleasant. In July and August this beach too, now well known on social media, sees high numbers of visitors that make it usable only if you arrive early in the morning.

Recommended times: early morning (by 9:00) or late afternoon (after 16:00) for more peace and better light for photos.

Conclusion: an authentic experience in the heart of the archipelago

Testa del Polpo beach is one of the unmissable points of interest for those visiting La Maddalena: protected nature, transparent sea and granite formations unique in the world. It is not the beach for those seeking comfort and services, but for those who wish to experience the sea in a more authentic and respectful way.
