From Cala Napoletana to Candeo

This path is the strategic link between the two great longitudinal itineraries of Caprera, the Western Ridge and the Eastern Ridge, and allows you to close the complete loop of the island without ever retracing your steps. The adventure begins from the crystal-clear waters of Cala Napoletana, a small, sheltered inlet on the western side where the seabed is shallow and a few boats rest at anchor, and from here the track immediately begins to climb towards the central saddle, tackling a short but decidedly steep stretch on an ancient military mule track with a compact surface, well marked by the Park’s poles.

Having reached the maximum altitude of 53 metres, the route changes rhythm and descends steadily eastward, guiding your steps towards the Candeo Battery, a spectacular early-20th-century coastal fortress armed during the Second World War which proves a masterpiece of architectural camouflage, with the casemates literally integrated into the rock and the walls built using the very same granite blocks of the promontory. From the esplanade of this ghost fortress, especially on days when the tramontana blows, the view over the Strait of Bonifacio becomes sharp, dramatic and immense, offering on the horizon, to the right, the solemn and clear profile of the coast of Corsica.

The return must be made on the path that will take you back to the Arbuticci fortress!

You will find no refreshment points, so it is strongly advised to carry supplies of water and snacks.

A note of caution for explorers: the climb back from Candeo to Arbuticci can be very tiring after a day at the sea; do not linger too long and always carry something extra to drink and eat.
