Cala Coticcio, known to sailors throughout the Mediterranean as «Punta Thaiti» for its extraordinarily fine white sand, is one of the least accessible but most scenic snorkelling points on the island of Caprera. The beach lies on the eastern side of the island, within the La Maddalena Archipelago National Park.
The sandy bottom extends underwater keeping its characteristic brightness down to about 15 metres deep, where it gradually gives way to granite rocks colonised by posidonia and the typical Mediterranean fauna. Among the possible encounters: banded sea bream, red and green wrasse, small groupers, and towards the point red gorgonians and yellow parazoanthus that decorate the rocky walls.
The cove belongs to the protected marine area: pleasure boats cannot approach closer than 300 metres from the shore, a provision enforced with attention in the summer months. To reach Cala Coticcio you need an authorised vessel or the trekking route from the Fort Arbuticci car park (Cala Coticcio path, about 45 minutes on foot).
